Review a used car advert before booking an inspection

Check vehicle identity, price wording, missing details and practical viewing arrangements before booking a used car inspection or travelling to a seller.

Reviewing an advert before booking an inspection helps you avoid travelling for a vehicle that cannot meet your needs. The review should establish what is being sold, what remains uncertain and whether the next step is a seller question or a viewing. It is not an inspection performed from photographs.

Read the full advert once

Start with the title, description, price and available photographs. Look for inconsistencies in year, model, mileage and transmission. Check whether the amount describes the whole vehicle or something else. Confirm that the advertised location fits your collection plans.

Do not assume a missing photograph means a defect, but do not treat it as evidence that the unseen area is sound. Note what you want clarified. An image of a dashboard or badge cannot independently establish the vehicle’s complete history or specification.

Separate facts, claims and unknowns

Use three columns in your notes. Put explicit advertised details in the first, seller statements needing confirmation in the second, and unanswered questions in the third. For example, an odometer figure is stated information; “perfect condition” is a broad claim; an unspecified engine is an unknown.

This prevents a promising description from quietly becoming a set of verified facts.

Decide whether an inspection is worthwhile

Ask about any issue that would stop the purchase before booking. A gearbox mismatch, impractical location or unsuitable body configuration does not need an inspection to become a rejection. For a candidate that still fits, discuss availability and an independent inspection arrangement with the seller.

Give the inspector the concerns you identified. An advert review can help focus the questions, but the inspector determines what they can assess. Do not infer repair cost or mechanical reliability from a marketing photograph.

Update the shortlist after new information

Suppose an advert initially looks like a suitable work van, but the seller confirms a shorter load area than you need. Remove it from the active shortlist and refine the relevant search requirement. If the issue is a repair estimate instead, revisit the purchase budget before proceeding.

Save the candidate in Autofindr while you investigate and retain your own inspection report where appropriate. The app organises listings and purchase records; it does not certify condition or guarantee the accuracy of the original advert.
