Before arranging a viewing, ask the questions that could change whether you would buy the car. Start with gaps or contradictions in the advert, then confirm availability and inspection arrangements. Specific questions are easier for a seller to answer than a long message asking whether the car is “good”.
Confirm the car in the advert
Ask for the make, model, exact version, gearbox and odometer reading if any are unclear. Confirm the measurement unit where needed. If photographs and text appear to describe different specifications, ask which detail is correct rather than choosing the more attractive interpretation.
Also confirm the full asking price and whether the complete vehicle is being sold. A finance example or deposit amount is not comparable with another car’s cash asking price.
Ask about known issues and records
Useful questions include:
- What work has been done recently, and are records available?
- Are there known faults or warning lights?
- Is anything shown in the photographs excluded from the sale?
- What condition or history information should a buyer know before visiting?
- Can the vehicle be made available for an independent inspection?
These questions help you prepare. A seller’s answer does not replace an inspection or independent checks. Missing information should remain a question in your shortlist, not become an assumption of good condition.
Agree practical details before travelling
Confirm that the car remains available, the general viewing area and a suitable time. Ask who will be present and how the seller’s authority to sell can be established during your checks. Keep personal documents and payment details out of casual messages until you understand the appropriate transaction process.
A concise opening message might be: “I am interested in the advertised automatic hatchback. Could you confirm the mileage, any known faults and whether an independent inspection can be arranged? If those details fit, I would like to discuss a viewing.”
Keep answers connected to the candidate
Review the seller’s answers against your requirements before making an appointment. If a newly disclosed issue changes the likely cost, update your budget assessment. If a core requirement fails, stop pursuing that candidate rather than trying to justify it because the advert looked cheap.
Autofindr helps you find and retain a shortlist. Seller communication and the vehicle transaction happen through the original marketplace or directly with the seller. It does not contact sellers or verify their claims on your behalf.
