Mileage is useful when comparing used cars, but it is only one part of the comparison. Two cars of the same age can have different specifications, maintenance histories and conditions. Use mileage to organise a shortlist, then investigate those differences rather than assuming the lowest odometer reading is the best purchase.
Compare similar vehicles first
Start with the same model generation, body style, engine and transmission. A lower-mileage base model is not automatically a direct price comparison for a higher-specification version. Keep seller type and location visible as well.
Once the vehicles are broadly comparable, look at mileage bands instead of pretending every kilometre or mile has one fixed monetary value. A universal amount per unit of distance would ignore the vehicle, its condition and the evidence available in that market.
Confirm the unit and the reading
Check whether the advert uses miles or kilometres. Autofindr can present distance in your chosen unit, but a poorly written advert may still be ambiguous. Ask the seller to confirm the displayed odometer reading if the title, description and photographs disagree.
Missing mileage is not zero mileage. If the figure is essential to your buying limit, use a strict filter and accept fewer matches. If you deliberately include unknowns, resolve the figure before comparing the car with known-mileage alternatives.
Example: two similar hatchbacks
Imagine two automatic hatchbacks with the same stated year and trim. One lists 70,000 km with little maintenance information; the other lists 105,000 km and describes recent work. Neither description proves mechanical condition. Ask what records are available and arrange an inspection appropriate to the purchase.
The higher-mileage vehicle may fit your budget better, but do not assume the mentioned work removes every future cost. Equally, the lower-mileage advert needs more information before its price premium makes sense.
Keep mileage uncertainty visible
In your shortlist, record the reading, unit and anything still to confirm. If the seller corrects the figure, revisit the comparison and your purchase limit.
Use Autofindr’s mileage filter to reduce the search to a manageable range. Then combine the retained facts with seller answers and an inspection. The goal is a justified shortlist, not a mechanical verdict based on one number.
