A spreadsheet and a vehicle register can both help track car purchases and sales. The better choice is the one you will keep accurate. Compare the amount of manual structure you want to maintain, the link to your sourcing workflow and how you will preserve your records.
What a spreadsheet gives you
A spreadsheet lets you choose columns, formulas and reports around your own process. It can be a straightforward option for a small number of vehicles, especially when you already use a workbook consistently. You are responsible for checking formulas, maintaining references between expenses and vehicles, and keeping reliable copies.
A useful structure separates purchase amounts, individual expenses, target sales and completed sales. Without that separation, an unsold car can appear profitable simply because a target price has been included as proceeds.
What the Autofindr register provides
Autofindr gives each purchase a vehicle record with itemised costs, dates, currency, notes and sale fields. You can start from a retained listing or add a vehicle found elsewhere. The actual purchase price is entered separately from the advertised asking price.
The register also calculates summaries from the recorded amounts and supports CSV exports. It does not replace original invoices or a complete accounting system, and its retention rules mean longer-term records need an independent copy.
Compare the recurring work
| Task | Spreadsheet | Autofindr register |
|---|---|---|
| Define the structure | You choose columns and formulas | Vehicle and cost fields provided |
| Add a found vehicle | Enter details yourself | Start from a match or manual entry |
| Record expenses | Maintain links and totals | Add itemised vehicle costs |
| Custom analysis | Build your own views | Export for further analysis |
The table describes workflow choices, not a claim that every workbook or register has the same capabilities. Check the fields you actually need.
Keep a usable exit path
If you move from a workbook, verify a small set of records first: one unsold vehicle, one completed sale and a vehicle with several expenses. Compare dates, currency and totals by hand before relying on the new view.
If you choose Autofindr, export while records remain available and before retention expires. If you stay with a spreadsheet, keep a consistent backup and avoid accidental formula changes. In either case, accurate entries matter more than a polished total that leaves important costs out.
