A Mazda MX-5 search should identify the generation, roof style and gearbox you want before comparing prices. A soft-top roadster and a retractable-roof version serve different preferences. Cars from different generations are not interchangeable price comparisons simply because they share the MX-5 name.
Start with the driving experience you want
Set Mazda and MX-5 in the marketplace model controls when available. In some markets sellers use “Miata”; in others, older imports may have different naming in the description. Use a separate keyword search if local naming produces gaps, rather than assuming every title uses one badge.
For example, a buyer seeking a manual soft-top can first set a suitable year range and budget, then check roof and transmission details manually where filters are incomplete. Someone considering a newer retractable-roof car should build a distinct shortlist. Review the first results before increasing the check frequency.
Keep the comparison groups meaningful
Compare generation, engine, gearbox, roof and condition together. An older low-mileage car may have maintenance needs unrelated to its odometer reading. A newer high-mileage example may have better documented recent work. Neither observation is enough to establish value on its own.
Photos should show the roof raised and lowered where appropriate, the cabin, bodywork and visible wear. Ask about roof operation, water entry and any repair history. Cosmetic descriptions such as “weekend toy” do not establish how a car was used or maintained.
Separate modified and incomplete vehicles
Track builds, engine swaps, rolling shells and hardtops sold separately can appear in broad searches. Keep complete road cars in their own comparison set. If you want a modified car, assess the exact work and available documentation rather than pricing the modifications at their claimed original cost.
Avoid excluding “track” without reviewing examples: an ordinary car may say it has never been used on a track. Negative words can remove relevant listings as well as unwanted ones.
Questions for an MX-5 seller
- Which engine, gearbox and roof configuration are fitted?
- Does the roof operate correctly, and has there been water ingress?
- What modifications have been made, and are the original parts available?
- What service and repair documentation accompanies the car?
- Can an inspection include the underside and roof mechanisms?
