Finding vehicles

How far should you search for a used car?

Choose a practical search area for used cars. Compare local inspection, travel and transport costs, and understand marketplace distance limits.

Choose your used car search area around the journeys you can realistically make. A distant advert with a lower asking price is not automatically the cheaper purchase once inspection, travel and transport are included. Start locally, then widen deliberately when the expected benefit justifies the extra work.

Set an inspection area and a collection plan

Your comfortable inspection distance may be shorter than the distance you would transport a confirmed purchase. Treat those as separate decisions. If you cannot visit twice, work out how you would arrange an independent inspection before spending money on travel.

Write a short rule for yourself: “I can inspect within an hour; farther away needs enough detail and an inspection arrangement first.” This is more useful than selecting the largest possible radius just to fill the feed.

Understand the available area controls

Autofindr requires a suggested location pick so the intended place is clear. Each marketplace then uses the location controls it supports. Some offer fixed distances, while others work through regions or a default area. A requested distance can therefore look different across sources.

Check the displayed configuration before saving. Review the listing’s location before contacting the seller, especially near borders, coastlines or places with similar names. Straight-line distance does not describe driving time or transport access.

Compare two collection scenarios

Imagine a local candidate at 12,000 and a distant candidate at 11,400 in the same currency. If the distant option adds 250 in travel and 400 in collection costs, its apparent 600 saving has disappeared before considering an extra day away from work. These are illustrative amounts; obtain actual quotes for your trip.

The distant vehicle may still be preferable because of specification or condition. The point is to make that choice explicitly rather than using the asking price alone.

Widen the search in stages

Begin with the area you can act on quickly. If there are few suitable matches, review overly strict vehicle filters before increasing distance. Then widen one search and compare the additional candidates with your original shortlist.

For a rare trim, a wider area can make sense. For a common work vehicle needed this week, local availability may matter more. Keep the collection cost in your purchase budget, and record actual transport expenses against the vehicle if you add it to the Autofindr register.
